Project Outline Portloman Water treatment plant is one of the top 25 strategic infrastructure assets for Uisce Eireann throughout Ireland. The plant serves approximately 60,000 people in Ireland’s midlands region, producing on average 22 million litres of water per day and will become an integral part of the wider development plan for water infrastructure over the coming years. The plant was originally constructed in 2002 by Murphy and we have operated the plant for Uisce Eireann since it was commissioned in 2003. In 2022, Murphy undertook a significant upgrade of the facility, which included: Replacement of existing chemical dosing systems, storage tanks and monitoring systems. Provision of a new Orthophosphoric acid dosing facility for lead pipe mitigation. Optimisation of coagulation process and providing pH control for the sulphuric acid dosing facilities. Installation of 6 new high lift pumps to feed the surrounding reservoirs. Upgrade to the ultrafiltration membrane system to improved process performance. Upgrade of the existing electrical system and improvements for energy efficiencies. Provision of a state-of-the-art PV generation system and e car charging point. Complete a biodiversity study and construct a wildflower meadow. Removal of equipment not in use for circular economy reuse on similar Uisce Eireann plants. Upgrade of existing operational equipment to improve operation resilience and energy efficiencies. Provision of a complete PLC (programable logic controller) system, control and automation replacement and provide 24-hour real-time information. Replacement and upgrade of the existing disinfection facility. Civil infrastructure improvement and high pressure pipework connections. KEY FACTS The area surrounding the plant is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and protecting the natural environment and utilising sustainable solutions to complete our works were key to our success on this project. Maintaining water quality and production without interruption to supply was a key achievement of the project. The project was delivered 3 months ahead of schedule
