Project Outline Working on behalf of Drax Group, the UK based renewable energy company, Nurphy undertook full design, build and commissioning of gas pipelines and high-voltage underground cables associated with the new power stations at Millbrook, Hirwaun and Progress. The scope of the project involved laying down new underground cross-country cables, constructing a new substation and a new high pressure cross-country gas pipeline to facilitate the natural gas connections between the power station and the National Grid Gas Transmission System. Millbrook, Hirwaun and Progress are using technology known as open cycle gas turbine power generation that can be put into operation rapidly and will help support the UK’s future energy security. KEY FACTS The new power stations will operate for circa. 500 hours a year (with a maximum availability of 1,500 hours depending on demand) Each power station will generate enough instant power to simultaneously boil 120,000 kettles.
