Working for our customer National Grid, Murphy was awarded the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the Barking 132kV Switchgear Replacement Scheme in 2019. The scope included the construction of a 17 bay GIS substation (with space for three future bays) to the South of the existing Barking substation. To accommodate the construction of the new GIS building, cable diversions and protections including a temporary interconnector between the new substation and Barking C, the transferring of circuits from the existing substation to the new GIS substation and the installation of 132kV cables to the existing traction transformers located at an alternative site were all required. The transfer of all National Grid owned circuits was co-ordinated with the transfers of the existing customer circuits to ensure that a balanced system with adequate resilience was always maintained. Now complete, the works are a key part of the local electricity infrastructure for Barking and Thames River area.
